Light Therapy

The use of light therapy in medicine has a long history. The first light source used in photo medicine was natural sunlight. Even in ancient Egypt sunlight was used for medical treatments. Later Hippocrates described the use of sunlight to cure various medical disorders. At this time sunlight therapy had no scientific explanation but its healing power was clear. Although Roman and Arabian physicians brought light therapy into general medical use, in modern times it was the Danish physician, Niels Ryberg Finsen, who first brought the importance of light to prominence, being awarded the Nobel prize in 1903 for his treatment of tuberculosis of the skin. In the 1960's a Hungarian research team discovered that polarised visible light was helping to regulate cell membrane activity. Each of us is made up of a network of 70 trillion cells in which an infinite number of chemical and physical processes are taking place, requiring constant inputs of healthy energy resources in the form of oxygen, food, water and light. We now know that polarised light in the wavelengths from 480 - 3,400 nanometres creates a process of photo modulation - the biological stimulation of tissue and blood cells inducing a process of gentle self-healing. This cellular chain reaction triggers secondary responses, which are not limited to the treated area but can involve the whole body.

It has been shown that in patients with rheumatological diseases treated with light therapy the pain was significantly reduced. Light therapy is ideal as a supportive treatment of soft tissue injuries such as sports damage. Light therapy is used world wide in both prevention and rehabilitation, and has no known side effects. Light therapy devices polarise the full colour spectrum of natural daylight including some infrared range but contains no ultraviolet rays at all.

Light therapy can reduce the pain experienced ie. Arthritic/rheumatic, Backache, gout, headache, migraine, muscle tension, toothache/earache, sinusitis, sore throat and colds. Light therapy has proven useful in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It can speed up the healing process associated with Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, skin ulcers, bedsores, wounds, burns and scars.

Optimal Health Solutions Ltd have a Light Therapy machine available for use under the supervision of our trained operatives. If you would like to try this treatment please say so when booking your appointment so that we can make sure that this equipment is available to you.
